Great news, you’ve just gotten off the phone with your realtor and your home is sold! Following the inevitable and much-deserved celebrations, it’s time to get things in order for the smooth transition into your next chapter of home ownership.

With your deal firmed up, deposit received and the sold sticker on the sign you will have to prepare to not only physically move your life out of the house, but to change the address on all your utilities, contact and billing information as well. A good time to start is two months before your move date. Beginning the process as soon as possible will ease your mind as moving day approaches.

Book movers.

The first matter at hand should be to schedule movers. Booking professional movers will make packing and transporting all your worldly possessions that much more manageable, and will assure you that you have booked a reliable company well in advance and you will not be left scrambling on the days before. While movers may seem costly, also keep in mind that you will have a lot happening in the days leading up to the move and delegating this task will leave you with one less thing to worry about.

Cancel Your Home Services.

You will need to get in touch with Canada Post six weeks in advance in order to setup mail forwarding to the new address. With about a month to go, contact BC Hydro to let them know you will be moving. Scheduling the change over early on will ensure that your electricity is connected and ready for when you move to your new home. Do not forget to set a cancellation date for your BC Hydro, so that you are not left paying two electricity bills. For cable and internet service, you will need to contact your provider to make sure they transfer over your account as well as have a service person available to install at your new home the morning before your arrival, or as close to that date as possible.

Redirect Your Mail.

When the move is three weeks away, you should begin to fill out and complete all your change of address forms. This includes everything from your magazine subscriptions, insurance, to your driver’s licence. Be sure to make all of your medical professionals, as well as your children’s schools, aware that you will be moving house.

With these in order, you can move to the, sometimes painful, reality of consolidating, organizing and physically packing your possessions. Many moving companies will deliver packing material and boxes prior to your move to help make the process as simple and prepared as possible.

Good Luck!
